The military uses natural complementary therapies including massage therapy and acupuncture in hopes that fewer officers take the “pill for every ill” approach. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Acupuncture is used by all branches of the U.S. military to treat many conditions, including pain and PTSD. Sgt. Rick Remalia broke his back, hip and pelvis while serving in Afghanistan. After several “Western” treatments did not produce the pain relief he had hoped for, Sgt. Remalia gave Acupuncture a shot.
Following his first Acupuncture treatment, he stated, “I’ve had a lot treatment, and this is the first treatment that I’ve had where I’ve been like, OK, wow, I’ve actually seen a really big difference.”
