Most of you have heard of the skins pH and that it’s important in your skins health. Now let’s get more specific and learn what pH refers to and why it’s important!
pH levels in your skin can help resolve or cause distress to your skin. When our skin fights infection or environmental stresses, its ability to combat these is affected by its pH level. When we ingest toxins via food or apply toxic skin care products, we impact our pH level and our skins’ natural ability to protect itself. As a result, our we experience irritation, dryness or acne or conditions such as dermatitis, eczema and rosacea.
The pH level of your skin refers to how acidic or alkaline it is. On a scale of 1-14, with 1 being the most acidic to 14 being the most alkaline, 7 is considered a neutral reading for your skin’s pH.
Our skin has a thin, protective layer on its surface, referred to as the acid mantle. If your pH is too alkaline or too acidic, the mantle is disturbed and skin conditions may result. For instance, cleansers and shampoos that use sodium laureth sulfate, which has an approximate alkaline pH level of 10 (very high) can be very drying and irritating to the skin. On the opposite spectrum, skin with overly acidic levels can be problematic and over strip natural oils which weakens the skins natural defenses. Ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids, retinoic acid, beta hydroxy acids and amino fruit acids if not used properly can overly dry your skin and cause increased breakouts.
When using products, it’s important to understand how their acidic and alkaline levels will impact your acid mantle and pH balance to maintain healthy, vibrant skin.
