You’ve heard all of these before. But what does it really mean? And is it true?

I’m sure you’ve been hearing a lot of buzz lately about products being organic, artisan made, pure, etc. There’s a growing movement in America of people trying to get healthier in every aspect of their life, and skincare selection is no different. But like any hot trend, you need to be careful and do your research. Let’s break down what these buzz words are all about, why they’re important, and how to tell whether or not the claims are accurate.

Organic.

Merriam-Webster Definition: of, relating to, yielding, or involving the use of food produced with the use of feed or fertilizer of plant or animal origin without employment of chemically formulated fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics, or pesticides.

When it comes to skincare products, it’s easy to overlook the importance of the term organic. Choosing organic foods, drinks and consumables are at an all-time high, but it’s important to remember that our skin is our biggest organ. Just like with the items we put into our bodies, we want to make sure that anything we put on our bodies is of the highest quality since it’s absorbed into the skin. Harmful chemicals and fertilizers used to grow ingredients ultimately find their way into the ingredients themselves, and therefore onto your skin and into your body. Organic ingredients not only help us, but also help the environment by not using harmful chemicals for growing, or by releasing harmful chemicals when using.  All of our products come in glass containers versus plastic as well, to ensure that we’re respecting the environment. Finally, organic skincare products are just like organic ingredients for cooking… they just work better!

BE CAREFUL! More and more companies are claiming to be organic when it isn’t entirely true. Be sure to look for the official term “USDA-certified organic” on the packaging. We strive to put the most organic ingredients possible into our products, including the hemp we use to create our CBD products, which is USDA-certified organic. You can spot true organic items in stores by looking for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s official USDA Organic Seal. This ensures that the product is certified and that it contains 95% or more organic ingredients.

Artisan Made.

Merriam-Webster Definition: a person or company that produces something in limited quantities often using traditional methods.

Okay, so why is that important? Artisan made means that we take the time, tenderness, and attention needed to craft our skincare line. This ensures that we’re delivering you the highest quality products, order after order. That’s because the expert precision that’s used to create these products makes them the perfect blend every time, and consistency is key in a skincare regimen. Again, like with the ingredients being organic, products that are artisan made are better for the environment as well.

There is no official way for consumers to distinguish if something truly is artisan made by looking at the packaging, but The Hartman Group suggests asking three questions:

  1. Does a real person craft this product with care?
  2. Is it made by hand, in small batches or limited quantities using specialty ingredients?
  3. Does it reflect expertise, tradition, passion, or a process?

Pure.

Merriam-Webster  Definition: free from what vitiates, weakens, or pollutes; containing nothing that does not properly belong.

What comes to mind when you think of something that’s pure? Is it a diamond? Crystal clear running water in a river or over a waterfall? Chances are whatever you’re picturing is clean, unaltered, free of additives and imperfections. And most likely, you find yourself at peace when you think about it.

That’s the exact goal of our skincare line. Knowing that something is pure, organic, and artisan made can and should make you feel good! Pure ingredients lead to pure skin, which leads to peace of mind and body. Here at JLessencials, we make sure everything is pure including the hemp we use for our CBD, which we source from 100% USDA-certified organic hemp plants and specially process to create exceptionally pure hemp oil extract.

Want to know if something is pure? Take the time to read the ingredients listed on your skincare products. If you don’t recognize one of them, look it up. What is it for? How does it make you feel knowing that this ingredient is going onto and into your skin? Ask yourself these types of questions. This will help you make your own conclusions as to whether or not you believe a company’s claims about pureness.

Authentic.

Merriam-Webster Definition: not false or imitation; real; conforming to an original so as to reproduce essential features.

Authenticity is something that can be elusive in the world of skincare. It seems like for every authentic product out there, there are even more “knockoffs.” One of the best ways to tell, and also one of the most tempting reasons to buy a product that isn’t authentic, is the price.

Authentic products will be more expensive because of the time, energy, and resources needed to create an organic, artisan made, and pure skincare line. You can also see this in the packaging. Does the product you’re questioning come in glass, or rather does it come in lower-quality plastic or metal casings? Authenticity is very important when it comes to CBD as well. Not all CBD is created equally, so make sure you’re doing your research when buying CBD skincare products or CBD products in general.

Results.

Merriam-Webster  Definition: to proceed or arise as a consequence, effect, or conclusion.

This is something that everyone can agree on. If a product, especially one that you’re paying extra for, doesn’t produce the desired result, why keep using it? You may see before and after photos that seem too good to be true. Sometimes they’re accurate, sometimes they’re exaggerated. The key here is to take everything with a grain of salt. Find companies that you trust and see what results they have available to show or discuss. Remember, you want the results to be for you and that doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the same for everyone else, so be sure to talk with an expert.
