The Art of Healing: Acupuncture, East Asian Medicine & Holistic Skincare

At JLounge, East Asian medicine isn’t one item tucked at the bottom of the menu. It runs quietly through our treatment rooms, from acupuncture to facials, to the tuning forks and acupressure that begin every Holistic Integrative Microneedling appointment.

Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice, often described as both an art and a science and the wider tradition it belongs to sees your body, mind and skin as deeply connected. That way of seeing things shapes so much of how we care for our clients.

So whether you’ve been curious about acupuncture for years, or you simply want to understand why your last visit felt so grounding, here’s an introduction.

What is East Asian Medicine, in Simple Terms?

East Asian medicine sees your body as one connected system, where energy, blood and information flow through pathways called meridians.

Rather than looking at one symptom in isolation, it asks a wider question: what’s happening underneath? From this perspective, stress, inflammation or emotional strain can disrupt the flow through those pathways. That can show up as tension, fatigue, poor sleep or skin that just doesn’t look like yours.

Acupuncture, acupressure, tuning forks, cupping and gua sha are all ways of supporting that flow and inviting the body back toward balance.

That whole-person way of seeing things is at the heart of everything we do at JLounge. It’s why we put so much consideration into how you feel, not only how you look.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture uses very fine, sterile needles at specific points along the meridians to encourage circulation and support your body’s natural ability to heal.

Think of your body as a living network, with pathways that carry energy and information between every system. Acupuncture works with precise points along those pathways to help clear what’s stuck and bring things back into balance.

From both Eastern and Western perspectives, acupuncture is used to help regulate the nervous system, release endorphins, improve blood flow and calm inflammation. Many people simply describe feeling grounded, relaxed and renewed.

What Does Acupuncture Actually Feel Like?

Most people find acupuncture far gentler than they expected: a brief sensation, sometimes tingling, then warmth, heaviness or a deep sense of calm.

If needles are the thing holding you back, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common worries we hear.

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin, much finer than the needles used for injections. Once they’re in place, you’re given time to simply rest, usually around 20 to 25 minutes. Some people even drift off to sleep.

Afterwards, you may feel relaxed and centered, and sometimes even energized. We’d suggest keeping the rest of your day gentle if you can, so your body has time to settle into the effects.

Do You Need a Health Concern to Try Acupuncture?

No. Some people come in for a specific concern, while many others book acupuncture simply to rest, reset and feel more like themselves again.

People come to acupuncture at JLounge for all kinds of reasons, including stress, sleep, digestion, hormonal shifts, pain and skin. But you don’t need a reason beyond wanting to feel a little more grounded.

If you spend most of your days holding everything together for everyone else, an hour where nobody needs anything from you is its own kind of care.

If you’re new to acupuncture with us, your first full session is always an Initial Acupuncture Treatment. It includes a consultation about your health and goals, followed by your first treatment. Your acupuncturist may also look at your pulse, tongue and any areas of tension. Just fill in your intake form ahead of time, or arrive 15 minutes early.

What Are the Ways to Experience Acupuncture at JLounge?

JLounge offers acupuncture ranging from a 15-minute ear session to extended Luxe treatments and facial rejuvenation acupuncture.

There’s no single “right” way in. Here’s how our options fit together:

Initial Acupuncture Treatment

is where every new client begins, with a consultation and your first treatment. Once you’ve had it, Follow-Up and Luxe sessions open up to you.

Lounge Ear Acupuncture

is a 15-minute session focused on stress relief and relaxation. It’s a lovely first taste if you’re curious, or a quick reset to add to your visit.

Standard Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture

to stimulate collagen and elasticity and encourage a healing response in the skin. Because it’s a whole-body treatment, it also calms the nervous system and helps balance you inside and out.

Luxe Acupuncture

is an extended session for returning clients. Alongside your personalized treatment, it brings in vibrational tuning forks, singing bowls, essential oils and CBD salve, and finishes with hot towels on your feet. It’s a deeply restful way to make acupuncture part of your self-care ritual.

Enhanced Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture

includes everything in the standard treatment, plus a cleanse and steam exfoliation with our JLEssencials facial products. It adds Celluma LED to support plumping and collagen production, and CBD serums for enhanced rejuvenation.

Ultimate Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture

is our most complete facial acupuncture experience. It includes a deep cleanse, steam exfoliation and CBD serums, and a stem cell–derived growth factor serum to amplify your skin’s collagen response. You then choose NuFace microcurrent for lifting and toning, or Celluma LED for plumping and collagen production.

Not sure which one suits you? Just ask us. We’re always happy to talk it through.

How Does East Asian Medicine Shape Holistic Skincare?

In East Asian medicine, your skin is a reflection of what’s happening inside. Holistic skincare cares for both, so your skin and your whole system can find balance together.

Congestion, dullness, redness or uneven tone can all offer clues about what’s going on beneath the surface, from circulation and stress to digestion and hormonal balance. So rather than simply asking “how do we fix this spot?”, we ask “what is your skin trying to tell us?”

That question shapes our skincare in a few different ways.

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture

This is acupuncture designed with your skin in mind. People come to it for holistic facial rejuvenation, to support circulation and lymphatic flow, to calm acne and inflammation, and to help their skin look healthy and radiant from within. Our Ultimate option also brings in stem cells and your choice of microcurrent or LED.

Holistic Facials

In our facials, time-honored tools like gua sha work alongside the newest skin technology, caring for your skin and your nervous system at the same time. You can read more in What Makes JLounge Facials Different. Gua sha and mushrooms also feature in some of our manicures and pedicures.

Holistic Integrative Microneedling

This is where old and new meet most clearly in our treatment rooms.

Plum blossom needling is a traditional East Asian technique that uses light, repeated tapping on the skin. Procell microchanneling uses a similar tapping motion rather than dragging across the skin. It creates tiny, even channels that encourage your skin’s own renewal and let the growth factor serums we use during your treatment reach the deeper layers where repair happens. These serums help boost collagen and elastin, calm inflammation, and improve texture and tone.

But before any of that begins, we take time to help you settle. Tuning forks are placed on acupressure points, with gentle pressure on your feet, hands, body and head, giving your body a chance to move out of “go mode.” Many people say it’s the moment they finally exhale.

Your treatment also draws on other East Asian techniques, including cupping, gua sha and jade rolling, so your skin and your whole system are cared for together.

Our post on Integrative Microneedling in Boulder explains the whole treatment.

None of these steps are added for the sake of it. They’re there because a body that feels safe and settled is better able to rest, repair and receive care.

Who is JLounge's Acupuncturist?

Amelia Vargas, L.Ac., LE, is a licensed acupuncturist and esthetician with more than two decades of experience in holistic health, integrative skincare and Eastern medicine.

Amelia was born and raised in Boulder, and knew from the age of 13 that she wanted to become an acupuncturist. That early interest in natural healing still shapes the way she works today, with real curiosity about the whole person in front of her.

Because she’s trained in both acupuncture and skincare, Amelia sees the connection between how you feel inside and how your skin looks every day. It’s a big part of what makes treatments here feel so connected.

Why Does Acupuncture Work Best as a Series?

Acupuncture is cumulative. Each session builds on the last, so the calm, balance and renewal you feel can deepen and last rather than fade between visits.

One session can leave you feeling wonderfully rested. But much of acupuncture’s value comes with time, as your body gets used to returning to a calmer, more balanced state.

That’s why your acupuncturist will usually suggest a rhythm for your care. Many people start with weekly or twice-weekly sessions, then space them out as they start to feel better. Others come back monthly or with the seasons, simply to stay grounded.

A series gives your body that steady rhythm. It also takes the planning out of your week. Your sessions are already on the calendar, so there’s nothing to decide or fit in.

All that’s left is to arrive, lie back and let yourself be cared for.
